May the 4th be With You: Force-Filled Star Wars Activities for Young Learners
Do you have a Star Wars fan in your house? (S)he will be saying,
‘Yoda Best!’
when you introduce these Star Wars themed activities on this Star Wars Day.
Oral Language and Discussion
There are many lessons to be learned from Star Wars. Why not have a chat with your child about some of these? What important messages can we glean?
Star Wars fan, Amy Ratcliffe, has put together 10 lessons in this article. Huff Post also shares 8 life lessons. How does your child’s list compare to these lists?
Star Wars Vocabulary
On the topic of language and discussion, how many words can your child think of that (s)he have learned from Star Wars? Carrots are Orange has put together Star Wars vocabulary cards and a list of suggestions for using them on her site.
As well as the ideas listed, I recommend printing the cards, shuffling them and placing them in a pile on the table. Turn over a card and begin telling a Star Wars story featuring whatever is on the card. Have your child turn over the next card and provide the next sentence of the tale based on the image revealed. Continue until all the cards have been revealed.
You may wish to place the cards face up on the table as they are revealed such that they serve as visual prompts for what has happened to date in the tale. Another interesting task to try is to see if your child can retell the tale (again, the picture prompts can be helpful here).
Yesterday was World Laughter Day but why let the fun end there? As we know, Star Wars memes abound today. Can your child create one of their own? Anyone stuck can find inspiration in these 50 Star Wars puns.
Why do doctors make the best Jedi?
Because a Jedi must have patience.
Star Wars Activity Packs (including writing, maths and pre-reading/pre-writing tasks)
I love the writing prompts contained in Part 4 of the pack and these will work for children of various ages. Simply differentiate by expected outcome in terms of the complexity of the sentences you ask your child to produce. Three other useful tasks in this pack are the acrostic poems, the 100 square challenges and the 2 Star Wars maths problems on the final page.
There is also a ‘Tot pack’ containing many useful pre-reading and pre-writing activities. I bet young members of your household will feel very grown-up working on the “same” Star Wars work as older siblings!
Star Wars LEGO Challenges
For fans of LEGO and Star Wars, I have found some really great challenges. On Frugal Fun for Boys and Girls, you will find instructions for building C3Po and R2D2.
Before I go, I must draw your attention to Starwars.com where you will find lots more suggestions for activities to do today. There are lots of recipes for Star Wars themed meals and snacks; crafts, discussion prompts, quizzes, polls and much more!
