5 + 5 Activity Resource (No. 22) – 5 Independent & 5 Cooperative Learning Activities to Try

Welcome to our 22nd 5+5 Activity Guide. As always, I’m sharing with you some really great teaching and learning resources I have found online in order to help you to keep your children active and learning at home.

Some of the activities are suitable for your child to work on independently; others are cooperative activities. I’ve focused on lots of projects, games, quizzes and arts and crafts ideas this week so that the emphasis is on FUN!

Let’s dive straight in with this week’s finds.

Cooperative

STEM – Experiments
  • Choose from one of these STEM experiments from the Science Foundation of Ireland.
  • Alternatively, there are lots more to choose from here on the Mathematics of Waves and Materials site. These activities are suitable for KS2+.

Transport Project
  • A lovely topic to explore with younger children is transport. Learning and Exploring Through Play shares lots of ideas for exploring the theme of transport.
  • That Kids Craft Site has collated lots of links to other transport-themed arts and crafts.
  • In addition, if you would like to get older children involved in activities on this theme, Transport for Greater Manchester has produced 2 activity packs (KS1 and KS2) on the topic of transport. Although they make reference to Manchester, there are puzzles, colouring, questions on the future of travel, and discussions on staying safe on public transport (KS2 only) that will be useful for children who live elsewhere.

Arts & Crafts
  • The Line is a public art walk in London, running between the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and The O2, following the Greenwich Meridian. This booklet guides you through the art to be viewed along the way and challenges readers to make their own sculptures inspired by these. Videos of the sculptors at work may be found here. An accompanying booklet provides more information about other things to look out for along the way – especially useful for those who ‘Walk the Line’ but snippets of information for all to learn from.

Arts & Crafts
  • Crayola.com is always useful for activity ideas and colouring pages. Lots of new summer crafts have been added to the site.

Activity Packs

Independent

Geography
  • Your child may enjoy this Primary Geography Bee. There is a study pack available for download and then a series of 5 quiz videos on topics such as mapping, landmarks and locations. Have your child work on this independently or host a family challenge! The materials are available for free, but users are asked to donate the price of a coffee.

ICT
  • iLearn2 offer a free sample activity pack and associated pupil activity pack for each year group from EYFS to Year 6, plus a free Scratch Pupil Activity Pack for each of Years 3-6. Get more details here.

English Reading
  • Go on a Pirate Adventure with Maria Kuzniar. Choose your own path through her pirate adventure tale.
  • Here is an epic list of authors doing read-alouds and offering other activities.
  • FreeKidsBooks.org is a website you may wish to bookmark for resources. It offers several different ways to search for reading material to suit your purpose, e.g., by grade, age or topic.

English Writing
  • Cranachan Publishing have produced this free eBook and corresponding task cards to support children to reflect on their time in lockdown. I recommend printing the task cards, cutting them out and having your child select one at random. Some of the activities are group chat tasks that may be undertaken as family conversations.

Maths
  • Maths Zone have put together a huge collection of free maths games that can be played on any device.

I hope this gives you some ideas for the week ahead and that I’ve showed you some new resources to support your child/ren. As always, follow me on Facebook,  Instagram and Twitter for daily conversation starters and lots of discussion topics.

Take care and stay safe all!
