In our previous post, we discussed the importance of being able to identify initial sounds in words. The next step is to practise identifying sounds at the ends of words.
As before, you will need the grapheme (letter) cards of stage 1 (available in our free download linked below). It is recommended you print these onto strong card, cut them out and laminate them if possible.
Check if your child can identify ending sounds using the words lists below.
S – us, gas, bus, this, less, loss, plus, boss, pass, mess, kiss, puss, axis, toss, iris, oops, sass, suss, flops, quits, floss, cress, sinus, amiss, chaps, gloss, bless, atlas, chess, lotus.
*Take care to ensure the words you pick end with /s/ (the s sound). Many words ending in s have a /z/, e.g. is/tabs, so we must be careful in our choice of words in order to avoid confusing children.
M – am, him, aim, ram, arm, sum, rim, mum, jam, gym, gum, gem, hum, hem, yam, pom, yum, from, team, form, drum, room, firm, warm, farm, boom, stem, beam, doom, swim.
N – in, an, on, can, own, man, run, ten, win, sun, ran, fun, van, don, fan, bin, pen, inn, tin, con, ton, yen, tan, kin, pun, yon, wean, shun, seen, when.
A – ta, ma, pa, boa, via, goa, baa, area, data, soda, puma, idea, java, sofa, saga, tuba, rota, papa, nova, lava, mama, tuna, visa, mega, gala, orca, cola, aura, yoga, soya.
Please note, for /e/ and /i/ endings, you will need to create lists of mainly “nonsense” words. Simply combine the e or i with a:
- consonant (b, c, d, f, g, h, j, k, l, m, n, p, qu, r, s, t, v, w, x, y, z)
- consonant digraph (ch, sh, th, wh)
- consonant blend (bl, cl, fl, gl, pl, sl, br, cr, dr, fr, gr, pr, tr, wr, sc, sk, sm, sn, sp, st, sw, and tw).
For example,
be (as in bet not the real word), the, cre, ske,
or
mi, shi, sni, twi.
Ensure you pronounce the ending sounds with /e/ as in egg and /i/ as in inch.
Again, I hope this is helpful and saves you time. Generating word lists on the spot can be tricky so it should be useful to have these to hand.
