An Analogy to Explain why we #StayHome. Beauty in a Bear by Nancy L. Ogilvie.

A very wise friend of mine shared this beautiful passage by Nancy L. Ogilvie.

At a time when we are faced with so much change, there is comfort in these words. Your children may be struggling to understand what is happening and why they must stay at home right now. This analogy may help foster a greater understanding of the importance of quarantine, why schools are closed, and why playing with friends and visiting family is not allowed. I have created a PDF of Nancy’s beautiful words for you to download, share and discuss with them.

You may also find this post on discussing Covid-19 with your children helpful.

I have also uploaded a workpack with a bear theme if your child would like to learn more about these fascinating animals. In it, they are tasked with naming as many bears as they can, identifying bears from their images, researching their favourite bear and creating a report on it, finding out more about animals that hibernate, and thinking of stories with bear characters. I have included links to comprehension passages on the theme of bears and to websites children may use for research.

A fun activity, but one copyright infringement laws preclude me providing materials for, is to download images of bear characters from cartoons and stories and see if your child can identify them. Start thinking of as many as you can to include – I bet some childhood memories are flooding back to you! How many did you list? Are you, “Smarter than the av-er-age bear?”

In case you missed it, I uploaded a post yesterday on Planning for Homeschooling and sharing a 5 + 5 guide of activity resources (5 independent and 5 cooperative learning activities) to get you set for the week. Our EPIC resource list , Outdoor Games and Activities and Indoor Games and Activities posts may also be useful if you are one of the many parents brand new to homeschooling this week.

As always, if you have any questions about teaching and learning, please do not hesitate to get in touch and I will endeavour to answer them.

**Update (March 26th, 2020) – A community movement has emerged in many places with people putting teddy bears in their windows for children who are going on bear hunts. What a wonderful addition to the theme of this post. For those on full lockdown, for whom outdoor exercise is banned, an indoor bear hunt equally offers lots of opportunities for fun and learning as discussed here.

***Further Update (April 24th, 2020) – On the bear theme, this video – Time to Come in, Bear – helps explain social distancing for children.

Take care and stay safe all!
