Word For Word Flip Cards are a versatile phonics resource designed to support the development of vocabulary, reading and spelling. As a child’s skills and knowledge develops, additional flip cards may be introduced to build on prior knowledge and support new learning.
Use the Word For Word Flip Cards to;
- Teach the sounds (phonemes) of English and how these are represented with letters (graphemes)
- Teach and practise single letter recognition
- Introduce digraphs (2 letters representing one sound, e.g. -ck for /k/ as in duck)
- Develop simple reading (decoding) and spelling (encoding) skills at the following levels: CV (Consonant-Vowel e.g., ma), VC (Vowel-Consonant e.g., am), CVC (Consonant-Vowel-Consonant e.g., mat), CVCe (Consonant-Vowel-Consonant +e, e.g., mate)
- Learn and practise new words by using the cards for word-building activities. This supports early spelling and sentence-building.
- Teach letter names (once introductory sounds are known) and the alphabet sequence
- Support visual discrimination between letters that children often confuse, e.g., b/d
- Play a variety of games to support the teaching and learning of phonics

- Split digraphs (a-e/ae, ee/e-e, i-e/ie, o-e/oe, u-e/ue) . An additional letter e card is included to facilitate word-building. Teach the split digraph using the split digraph cards but use the vowels and the additional letter e when the child is building words.
- ve [English words do not end in v. Use this card when children are spelling words such as have, dove, live (as in ‘I live in a flat’) that do not include a long sound (split digraph). Contrast those examples with Dave, hove, live (as in ‘The show is live on air’)].
