Word for Word: Stages 5 – 8 (Book 2) Launch!

Happy New Year!

I am thrilled to begin 2020 by sharing with you book 2 (Stages 5 – 8) of our Word for Word series.

The scope and sequence of Word for Word Stages 5 – 8 is as follows:

Stage 5

Split Digraphs

a_e (ae), i_e (ie), o_e (oe), u_e (ue) and ee (e_e)

Stage 6

Open & Closed Syllables

Stage 7

R-controlled Vowels

ar, or, er, ir, ur (& Vre/-eer endings)

Stage 8

Alternative Long Vowels

ai/ay, ea, oa/ow, and igh

Pupils are introduced to letter names, syllables, syllable types, and many more ‘flashcard words.’ This book focuses in much greater detail on reading and language comprehension.

Building on the foundations laid in Word for Word Stages 1 – 4, this second book supports pupils to read, write, and discuss sentences of increasing length and complexity.

By stage 6, pupils are introduced to short paragraphs. Each paragraph features questions and discussion prompts to promote vocabulary acquisition and the development of background knowledge. In this way, Word for Word supports both the decoding and the language comprehension elements of Gough and Tumner’s (1986) Simple View of Reading as well as incorporating more strands of Scarborough’s Reading Rope.

During Word for Word stages 5 – 8, pupils are taught the concept of homonyms and homophones and given the opportunity to discuss these and practise their correct usage.

Word for Word Stages 5 – 8 contains:

  • A comprehensive introduction explaining the Word for Word programme and how to successfully deliver it, including planning guidelines and templates;
  • Comprehensive background notes on each of the stages in book 2;
  • Hints, notes, and teaching tips throughout the book to keep you on track;
  • Suggestions for a range of activities to promote phonological awareness;
  • Vocabulary development ideas;
  • 20 decoding and 20 corresponding encoding pages;
  • 100 pages of supplementary activities, including familiar activities (Read and Draw, Letter Change, Circle the Odd One Out, Unscramble the Jumbled Letters, Sentence Reading and Dictation pages) and several new format ones (Vowel Coding Tasks, Cloze Procedures, Use of a/an, Draw/Mime a Homonym and Paragraph Reading and Comprehension Tasks);
  • All the grapheme cards and flashcards required to implement the programme;
  • Summative assessment pages;
  • Blank document templates to be used to create your own targeted activities to address identified areas of weakness;
  • All of this at an affordable price!

Purchasers are advised to download the file and bind it along the top. It is recommended the enclosed grapheme cards and flashcards are copied and laminated for daily use. It is also recommended a planning and tracking document is downloaded for each pupil. This may be kept with their Word for Word book for daily tracking purposes. For ease of use, you may wish to print the planning documents on A3 paper.
