5 + 5 Activity Resource (No. 3) – 5 Independent & 5 Cooperative Learning Activities to Try!

Welcome to another 5 + 5 Activity Guide with lots of ideas for keeping children busy, learning and entertained throughout these school closures. Although many children now have an Easter break, there are lots of countries where this isn’t so. As such, I will be continuing to upload a weekly 5 + 5 Guide throughout this period. Many parents who wish to keep their children in the routines now established may intend to have them continue doing a little schoolwork each day as well. As before, I will make suggestions for both independent and co-operative learning tasks.

5 Independent Activities

  • Learn about compound words and try your hand at solving over 100+ compound words comprised of emojis with this free compound words download. With younger children, use this activity as a stimulus to have them create and draw their own compound words, e.g., sun + flower = sunflower. Get them to draw some compound words and have a family guessing game (pictionary style).

  • Enjoy these re-imagined images and verses from Julia Donaldson and Alex Scheffler as announced here on Twitter. For your convenience, I have downloaded and saved all the images here in a single Donaldson/Scheffler PDF. How about having your child create their own rhyme in this style to teach other children how to stay safe and well?

  • In case you missed it, April 4th marked the anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Learn more about his life and legacy with this free inquiry download containing links to useful resources and information your child can access and study independently. As I mentioned in the accompanying blog post, the BrainPOP activities in particular are worth checking out  as they model some useful study practices for your child.

5 Cooperative Activities

  • As it is Easter/spring break for many children, I have put together a themed activity pack with lots of links and ideas for arts and crafts, games, learning, stories, poems, jokes, recipes and more. There are lots of activities to be found even if your family does not celebrate Easter. Check it out and download for FREE here!

  • Once again I have created a CardEd 5 day Activity download (week 3). This set features e-a-s-t-r cards, so if you wish to print 2 copies of the e cards, children can see if they can make a seasonal word using all the letters. Then have them try making as many small words as possible from them. As usual, the activities suggested will suit children of mixed ages so are useful if you are working with more than one child. Remember to download our CardEd Activity Guide if you would like more inspiration for using our cards at home!

  • Try to create a famous artwork using objects from your home. Thanks to Leigh Drake on Twitter for this idea. Follow her for lots more inspiration.

  • Why not watch a musical as a family? Every Friday, one of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musicals will be uploaded to YouTube and available for 48 hours to be enjoyed over the weekend. The series began with Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat (uploaded April 3rd). This will be followed by Jesus Christ Superstar (10th – 12th April).

I hope everyone has a wonderful week. If you know of any brilliant activities or learning resources I should include in an upcoming blog post, please be sure to link them in the comments. Don’t forget to subscribe so that you are kept up-to-date with all the news and resources from Dumond.

Take care and stay safe all!
