The Leitner System is a retrieval practice study tool involving the use of flashcards. Having created flashcards for the information they wish to retain, students review known cards at increasingly growing intervals.
The most effective flashcards have one piece of information per card, e.g.,
- A word on the front and the definition on the back;
- A question on the front and the answer on the back.
Unknown cards are reviewed daily; the review period for known cards varies according to the review schedule being implemented.
The linked videos here and here show how to implement a modified version of the system across a 5-day week for young learners and demonstrate how the cards are moved through the boxes if the information on the card is known.
The attached resource is aimed at older, independent learners implementing their own revision timetable. These tracking documents are suitable for implementing a 28-day or 64-day Leitner System. Students should be creating and adding new flashcards each day. Use of these tracking tools is explained more fully here.
